Berm Repair Underway
By EDan Hopping

You will notice that the berms at range two and three are currently undergoing construction. The club is working to raise the berm by 8 to 9 feet and reverse the erosion on those ranges. On range three the berm has eroded over the years since the bullseye folks are so accurate and the impact areas are very tight. The erosion has clogged the drain basins in back of the berms and made the ranges extremely muddy after our rare rains. This will make the berm about ten feet thicker and will come out to near the back of the 50-yard target frames.

This effort has been underway for some time. We had an opportunity last year to acquire some gambions at a fraction of their cost in preparation for this effort. They will be placed on top of the berms to raise the height without widening the berms too much. We are contracting the earth moving but several members are volunteering their time and equipment to keep the cost down. Barry Allen and Scott Graham used their trucks and trailers to bring the gambions in from Pittsboro. Elvie Jackson used his crane to place them and has offered to come back and place them on top of the berms.

You might have noticed a large machine operating on the range a few months ago that clears a 9-foot wide path through the woods. The machine cleared a path around the back of the berms so we can get a backhoe around to the drain basins and clean out the silt. The machine also cleared the land where the dirt will be removed to resurface the berms and the area that was originally meant to be a long-range facility.

You might want to take a walk around ranges 1-5 and enjoy the view. The work now being done is to remove dirt from the rise north of the Skeet field and use it to reface the berms on ranges two and three. We are working to minimize the impact on matches and the use of the ranges.

The power pole by the training building rotted through and fell over recently. It was replaced on the last workday. We really appreciate the work done by the members. This type of effort by our membership is very important to the safety and operation of our range. This is a volunteer club and the workdays organized by Range Officer Don Davis are what make the range run smoothly. Don't forget to attend as many workdays as possible this year.

Remember that the club has a Range Development Committee that is headed by Lou Mallia. This committee is working on long range planning resulting from your responses to the Club Member Survey. We are considering re-doing the survey this year. Suggestions for long range planning can be sent to Lou.

Women On Target
By Edie Reynolds

With support from the NRA, NRA Foundation, and Sir Walter Gun Club, there will be a women's only instructional shooting clinic held at SWGC on Sunday, April 20, from 8:30-4:30. All women are encouraged to attend. You can download the registration and information form at sirwaltergunclub.com and send in your fee. The event is filling up quickly. We can accommodate 48 women. No firearm experience is necessary. Each participant will be introduced to pistol, rifle, shotgun, and cowboy action. Lunch will be included.

Certified women instructors will run the event. We do however need some men to help with concessions, set up and clean up. If you would like to help please contact Martie Schulte at . This is a SWBOD approved workday. All volunteers will receive workday credit.

Guest Speaker for February SWGC Monthly Meeting: Ray Anti
By Edie Reynolds

Ray Anti will come to speak to us all the way from Winterville, NC, March 18th, after requests from some of you for a military speaker. Ray is a retired Marine Chief Warrant Officer who is very familiar with the shooting sports in the military. It was 50 years ago this year that he first became involved in the shooting sports with the NRA Junior Rifle Program at the Navy Memphis Junior Rifle Club at NAS, Millington, TN. He has vast experience as a competitor, tournament director (he runs monthly Garand matches at Pitt County Wildlife Club), match official (serving 33 years as a volunteer at the NRA National Matches; with grandson in tow in 2007), and is the father of Mike Anti, 2004 Olympic Silver Medallist. Ray is also involved in his area with Friends of NRA and Youth Hunter Education Challenge.
