Objective: The Sir Walter Junior Smallbore Rifle program is organized to promote rifle marksmanship and safety with firearms.
Participants: Both boys and girls age 10 to 20 are encouraged to participate in the junior smallbore rifle program.
Cost: The annual dues are $30.00 per year, plus a nominal entry fee for matches. The junior club meets once a month, March through October.
Program: The junior program is based on the National Rifle Association's 4-Position Smallbore Rifle Qualification program. The shooting positions include prone, sitting, kneeling, and standing. Participants must attend an NRA First Steps Rifle Course in order to participate in the program. (The cost of the course is an additional $10 per junior shooter).
Awards: Awards are presented to the junior shooter as he/she completes the different levels of the qualification program. The awards range from the Basic Practical through Pro-Marksman, Marksman, Sharpshooter, Expert and Distinguished Expert.
Equipment: The Sir Walter Junior Rifle Club provides all of the equipment needed for a junior shooter to get started in the qualification program, including rifles, shooting jackets, shooting mats, gloves, slings, eye protection, ear protection, targets, and ammunition. There is no additional charge for the use of the Club equipment. Each junior is encouraged to eventually obtain their own personal eye and ear protection that they find to be most comfortable for them.
Instructors: National Rifle Association certified instructors will be present at each scheduled Junior Club meeting to assist and coach juniors in their selected shooting program. NRA certified Range Safety Officers supervise the operation of the firing range at all times.
Contact: For additional information, contact the Sir Walter Junior Smallbore Shooting Director, Bill Reynolds at 919-961-9734, e-mail .
