Range Safety Officer Course

Due to snow the 1/30 RSO course was postponed to March 6, 2010. There are still seats available for the class. The course will be for club members only; the cost will be $35. This includes books and other materials needed for the class. There will also be a processing fee to NRA of $20 for NRA members and $25 for non-NRA members as well as a certification fee to NRA of $6 for NRA members and $11 for non-NRA members.

There is a limit of 20 students for this class. If there is enough interest there will be another class in the spring. This is the NRA Certified RSO course that allows club members to bring up to five guests and participate in club functions as an RSO. This certification is recognized nationwide, not just at the club facilities.

NRA Recruiting Bonus

Sir Walter has been assigned a NRA Recruiting Number which should be prominently written on all NRA renewals and new member applications. All new memberships and renewals will net the club a recruiting bonus. The bonus varies from one kind of renewal to another, but if all our club members use this number on their annual renewals, we should receive several thousand dollars each year from the NRA. Remember, just write the membership recruiter number XC014145 on your application or renewal form.

Concealed Handgun Reciprocity In North Carolina

As of August 14, 2003, North Carolina law allows residents of other states who have a Concealed Handgun Permit issued by their state to carry concealed handguns in North Carolina if the person's state also grants the same privilege to North Carolinians. Because North Carolina's law on concealed handgun reciprocity is new, the list of states that have agreements with North Carolina is changing and will be updated regularly.

North Carolinians who have a concealed carry permit from our state will be able to possess a concealed handgun while visiting states on the list but will be subject to the laws of that state and are responsible for educating themselves about those laws. Similarly, if you have a concealed carry permit from one of the states on this list, you will be able to possess a concealed handgun while you visit North Carolina. However, while you are in North Carolina you will be subject to all of our state's laws governing the carrying of a concealed handgun.

In North Carolina, concealed handguns may not be carried:

  • In law enforcement or correctional facilities such as a prison;
  • In financial institutions such as a bank;
  • In any space occupied by state or federal employees, including state and federal courthouses;
  • In schools or on school grounds;
  • In areas of assemblies, parades, funerals or demonstrations;
  • In any place where alcoholic beverages are sold and consumed (such as some restaurants);
  • In any area where concealed handguns are prohibited by federal law;
  • In any place of business that has posted a sign banning concealed weapons on its premises;
  • By any person while consuming alcohol or while under the influence of alcohol or any controlled substances (unless obtained legally and taken as directed by a physician).
To possess a concealed handgun in North Carolina, you must:
  • Carry your permit and a valid form of identification with you at all times.
  • Disclose the fact that you have a valid concealed handgun permit when you are approached or addressed by any law enforcement officer in North Carolina
  • Inform the officer that you are in possession of a concealed handgun.
  • Present both the permit and valid identification at the request of an officer
NOTE: You should not attempt to display either your weapon or your permit unless directed to by an officer. The following is a current list of states that have concealed handgun permit agreements with North Carolina:

Alabama Alaska Arizona Arkansas
Colorado Deleware Florida Georgia
Idaho Indiana Kansas Kentucky
Louisana Michigan Mississippi Missouri
Montana New Hampshire North Dakota Ohio
Oklahoma Pennsylvania South Carolina South Dakota
Tennessee Texas Utah Virginia
Washington Wyoming

 Cowboy Action Shooting Matches

The Club is now holding Cowboy Action Matches under the leadership of Club member Randy Pittman (a.k.a. Rev Marrying Sam). Matches will be held on the 2nd Saturday of each month, with the Safety Briefing starting at 9:00 a.m. Cowboy action shooting is one of the fastest growing shooting sports. The Single Action Shooting Society (S.A.S.S.) is the governing organization that establishes the rules and equipment requirements for the match.

The match is open to the public and to all interested cowboys and cowgirls. The match fee is $10 for SWGC members and $15 for non-members. If you've ever wanted to be a cowboy/girl or wanted to shoot in an old-west match, now is your chance. If you have questions, give Randy Pittman a call at 693-1644 in Oxford or Fred Stough at 847-8525 or at the e-mail address or see the Match Bulletin for additional details.

 Special Projects List

The Board of Directors is compiling a list of various projects that members can sign up for if they are unable to attend a regular monthly workday. Completing one of the projects will count the same as having attended a workday and will result in the waiver of the range maintenance fee next year.

Most of the projects can be easily done by one or two members in less than a day. If there are any materials involved such as paint, lumber, etc. the Club will pay for those items. For a list of the projects contact Don Davis at 919-676-6913 or e-mail address .

 Personal Defense & Handgun Safety Center

One of Sir Walter's club members, Mike Tilley, is offering a 20% discount on a membership at the Personal Defense & Handgun Safety Center to all Sir Walter Gun Club members. For additional information call 919-417-0000 or e-mail .
